Vampires graced the big screen since the dawn of time, forcing us to follow them into darkness decade after decade, and it seems they’re really here to stay for Eternity. Many dismissed them as annoying sparkling creatures after the success of Twilight gave them a bad rep. If you avoided new new releases solely for that reason you might’ve missed some of the best vampire films ever made.
The same year everyone was talking about Bella and Edward, Tomas Alfredson gave us a couple with far more compelling story in Let the Right One In. Back in 2013, Jim Jarmusch proved that being immortal can actually be a burden with Only Lovers Left Alive. Only a year later we came to learn vampires can be hilarious thanks to What We Do in the Shadows. It just makes you wonder about all the stories lurking in the dark, waiting to be discovered…..
George A. Romero gave us some of the most iconic horror movies, but this one was the most out of the box. It stands as a constant reminder that monsters aren’t always something out of fairy tale and that we create them on our own.
Near Dark (1987)
Near Dark was easy to dismiss since it came out almost at the same time as the big hit The Lost Boys. Kathryn Bigelow played with different genres in her story about a group of vampires on the road, which gained a cult following in the years to come.
If you scratch underneath the surface, vampire films aren’t always here to tell the stories about supernatural. Our imagination gives power to these creatures – it certainly does in this movie about a little boy who believes his neighbor is a vampire and the cause of all bad things happening around him.
Park Chan-wook’s contribution to vampire genre tells a story of a priest who starts craving human blood after receiving a blood transfusion following a failed medical experiment. It comes to show even those with unwavering faith sometimes can’t restrain themselves when it comes to their primal desires.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
If you thought it’s impossible to make a movie about a skateboarding vampire girl, Ana Lily Amirpour is here to prove you wrong. Her debut follows the lonely woman who roams the streets of the Bad City – a place filled with corrupt individuals, who are unaware that there’s a real predator walking among them.
