5. Full of Hell and Primitive Man

“Harsh grinding death” three-piece Full of Hell is currently on tour supporting their deadly new release, Weeping Choir. The album is a hulking beast of heavy, dissonant riffs. Fans of the doomier variety should absolutely not miss Primitive Man as their support. The “soul-crushing blackened doom” outfit is one of the best bands to come out of recent years. They are absolutely insane live. Look out in the future for a review of this killer show.

4. Russian Circles

Post-metal juggernauts Russian Circles have announced an exhaustive tour for their upcoming release, Blood Year. Russian Circles is an absolute treat to catch live. I saw them supporting Electric Wizard last year. They blew me away with just how tight, compact, and effortless their performance was. The group knows how to construct a heavy atmosphere and killer riffs. Catch them, you will not regret it. Windhand will also be supporting them on some dates.

3. Church of Misery

Japanese stoner-doom rockers are cursing the U.S. with their presence this year. Their albums are heavy, nostalgic, and straight-to-the-point rockin’ doom. Their live shows, I hear, are also fantastic as well. Grab a beer, attend your local venue, and see this Japanese riffmakers do their thing. Maybe they’ll tour the U.S. more. Any heavy fan should not miss out. Toke is also supporting them on some dates. If you haven’t heard of Toke, you’re going to dig them.

2. Sleep

The legends of the stoner-doom scene are on tour yet again still supporting last year’s 4/20 release The Sciences. If you haven’t seen Sleep yet, I’m gonna have to revoke your stoner-doom fanatic card (I kid, I kid). But these Sonic Titans know how to rock a stage decades later. Matt Pike and Al are still as rocking (and stoned) as ever. The riffmaster and the bassmaster are the premier musicians in the scene. Go see them, have a beer, smoke a J (cough*if it’s legal*cough), and come back and thank me later.

1. Melvins

My dear fanatics: Melvins are fucking great live. There’s not much to say about the foremost veterans in the sludge scene. They’re prolific, they’re rocking, and Buzzo is still rocking that iconic look he’s had since the early 90s. If you haven’t seen them, I implore you to. Go catch one of their many shows and hope they play more off of Lysol and Stoner Witch.
