The prolific horror studio Blumhouse seemingly does it again in the trailer for their latest movie, Ma, starring Octavia Spencer in an avatar like you’ve never seen her before! Octavia Spencer In The Ma Trailer Is The Creepiest Thing You’ll See Today
Octavia Spencer has been known for some of the greatest supporting roles and is considered one of the best character actors in the industry. Known for movies like Hidden Figures, The Help and The Shape Of Water, Spencer’s inclusion elevates any movie. The Oscar-winning actress has been part of some of the best films in recent times.
So when she’s the lead of the latest Blumhouse studios horror production, you have to stand up and take notice. The trailer for Ma showcases Spencer in a never-before-seen light as she manipulates and terrorizes people left and right while looking amazingly creepy!
The trailer itself features a group of teenage high schoolers, looking to party, who happen upon a harmless little lady and take their chances in asking her to buy them alcohol. What follows is a lot more than they bargained for; while that seems good at first, it’s mostly all bad, as we find out in the trailer. While Spencer’s Ma initially ingratiates herself to the impressionable group by giving them refuge to party in, away from their parents, there is a lot more to her than they can even imagine.
The trailer looks great and Spencer looks amazing, I have to wonder if the trailer maybe revealed way too much of the movie’s story. Based on the trailer, we already know that Ma seems like she went to high school herself with the parents of the teenagers. It almost feels very much like the typical horror-thriller about a psycho whose origins go back to being bullied in high school, returning to take revenge her bullies. Only this time, using their kids for her elaborate revenge plan.
Ma features some other known faces besides Spencers, such as Juliette Lewis, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, and Missi Pyle. The group of teenagers are relative unknowns but can be considered up and comers, such as Diana Silvers. Spencer reteams with her The Help director, Tate Taylor, for Ma, and it’s a unique combination. Taylor has not done much horror in his career so Ma will be an interesting experiment for the talented director. Ma is written by Scotty Landes, known mostly for TV writing, making this his first feature film debut.
Honestly, Ma looks so insanely creepy, but also one of the most interesting horror films. The trailer seems to avoid most of the horror movie cliches of too much blood and gore, which is also refreshing. The story seems unique enough that it hooks you in, and despite a lot of reveals in the trailer, you still want to know more, especially the reasons why Ma does what she does. Spencer’s performance alone should be enough to sell this movie to audiences because she looks stellar.
Ma releases on May 19, 2019.
