All the Horror movies have one and a very important thing in common – a fantastic villain. If you prefer watching slasher movies you definitely know that the villain most likely is either a murder having a sad background or a crazy serial killer with the most unique ways of killing and torturing.
Here are some examples of your favorite Horror movies inspired by real-life murders and serial killers.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is said to have been inspired by Ed Gein.
Tobe Hooper’s 1974 film is technically based on “one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of American history”. Leatherface is fictional but among Gein’s personal possessions police found all manner of items made from human skin and bones, including masks similar to the one worn by Leatherface.
Halloween‘s Michael Myers bears a nearly identical resemblance to real-life killer Edmund Kemper.
Director John Carpenter won’t confirm the connection, but let’s look at the facts: Both men killed a family member (or three) as a child; the murderers are nearly the exact same height, and both stabbed and strangled victims. Edmund Kemper was arrested in 1973, and Halloween premiered five years later.
The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)
The silence of the lambs is also inspired by a true crime story.
Danny Rolling was the one who inspired the movie Scream.
It all began Friday, August 24, when Danny Rolling killed freshmen Sonja Larson and Christina Powell. The very next day he killed his third victim Christa Hoyt. The next Monday, he killed again — this time, 23-year-olds Tracy Paules and Manny Taboada. This story might seem familiar because these terrible massacres were the inspiration for the 1996 film Scream penned by Kevin Williamson.
Hostel: Part II (2007)
In Hostel: Part II we see one of the young victims being hung from the ceiling and carved up while the naked Mrs Bathory lies beneath her bathing in blood. This character is based on the most prolific female serial killer in the world Elizabeth Bathory.
She was tried for murdering more than 650 young women. She used a variety of methods to torture and murder her victims, but was best known for bathing in the blood of the girls to keep her looking young.
